Dr. Samuel A. Davis is an astrophysicist originally from Roanoke, VA. He is a 45 year-old African American.
Dr. Davis was a bright student who took AP classes in high school while performing with the marching and concert bands. He was fascinated with space dreamed of becoming an astronaut.
Dr. Davis attended Howard University in Washington and graduated Summa Cum Laude, receiving a BS in Astrophysics in 1991, and remained at there for another year in the physics graduate program.
Leaving Howard University he enrolled in the University of Michigan, entering the doctoral program in the Department of Astronomy and received his MS in Astronomy in 1994 and went on to finish his thesis (on elliptical galaxies). In 1998 he received his Ph.D.
Dr. Davis began work for NASA in 1998, but was unable to qualify for the astronaut program due to the rigorous physical requirements to qualify for the training. Instead, he worked for NASA for 10 years before leaving to take a research position with GEMINI in 2008. He currently works out of the Pacifico office of GEMINI.
